IUPAT Members in Canada in Political Action-Party memberships seen as key to Alberta race

EDMONTON -- In Alberta, the race to become the province's next leader isn't so much about new policies or ideas as it is a large-scale sales job.

So the eight men vying to replace retiring Progressive Conservative Leader and Alberta Premier Ralph Klein have been working less on perfecting their platforms than selling as many $5 party memberships as they can.

"I've spent the last year and a half not trying to garner headlines so much as getting volunteers in places such as Brooks and Claresholm and Edson and Hinton," said Mark Norris, a former Klein cabinet minister and Edmonton businessman, who is running for the province's top political job. "That's really the point of this whole exercise. If you don't have the organization, you can't win -- period."

Like the 1992 Tory leadership race, the party will use a one-person, one-vote system, so signing up members is vital for a victory. Anyone who is 16 or older, a resident of Alberta for the past six months and has $5 to buy a party membership can vote in their home constituency. Read more...
