A United Front of Building Trades Unions Make Their Stand Against UBC Raiders
In the spring of 2004, years after leaving the AFL-CIO, the United “Brotherhood” of Carpenters (U"B"C) made the decision to raid the drywall finishing jurisdiction of The International Union of Painters and Allied Trades in Iowa and Nebraska. This was not the first attempt by the U"B"C to steal work unanimously recognized as belonging to the IUPAT. They’ve tried before in places such Baltimore (1997), Detroit (1998), California (1999), Kansas City (2000), Toronto (2001), Cincinnati (2002) and New Jersey (2003). They were unsuccessful in each instance, only a handful of union men and women voted to join compared to the hundreds that voted against them.
The Carpenters abandoned the AFL-CIO for their own purposes, which obviously include the desire to steal their former union brothers' rightful work.
The International Union of Painters and Allied Trades was joined by its brothers and sisters in the Building Trades and the AFL-CIO in its protest against such practices. In August of 2004, the Unity Resolution was created, voted on and ratified by a joint vote between the delegations of the IUPAT and the Sheet Metal Workers at their general conventions. The historic vote was held live, via satellite, between Washington, D.C. and Chicago.
The Unity Resolution represents the determination of all union brothers and sisters to practice true solidarity so that we all may keep the union strong and growing and stronger.
Now the Carpenters are making a blatant attempt for the drywall finishing work in New York City. Their raid comes just on the heels of the IUPAT winning a decision in federal court that clearly states drywall finishing is the jurisdiction of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades.
