Herald News: Local painters use Fall River’s Big Mamie as their training ground

FALL RIVER, MA — Masked men are deep inside the Battleship Massachusetts, scraping her skin with steel blades and files.
It is a thing of beauty to Kenneth Preble, the man in charge of keeping Big Mamie afloat.

“It is just great to get help, plus they know what they are doing,” Preble said. “They get training and we get work done. It is a great opportunity for all of us.”

A dozen painters were at work on the battleship Wednesday, continuing the never-ending task of keeping steel and salt water separated by a layer of paint.
