From the BCTD: Construction Expert David Weil Nominated to Head DOL Wage and Hour Division

The AFL-CIO Building and Construction Trades Department reported that David Weil, a construction expert and CPWR (the Center for Construction Research and Training) Advisory Board member, has been nominated as administrator of the Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour division.  This arm of the DOL is on the frontline in our fight against employee misclassification and wage abuse in the construction sector.

The BCTD reports that Weil, a professor in the school of management at Boston University, is “eminently qualified” for the post.  Moreover, Weil is a “much-honored scholar at Boston University and Harvard University, in 2010 Weil authored a thought-provoking report for the Division, ‘Improving Workplace Conditions through Strategic Enforcement.’ The report explored the implications of various new forms of contingent employment and how the Department might respond. Dr. Weil has been involved with CPWR since its inception, first as a member the Construction Economics Research Network, and later serving as Chair after the passing of Professor John Dunlop, former Secretary of labor. He is currently a member of CPWR’s Technical Advisory Board, and has been engaged in various capacities with several of our affiliated building trades unions.”

Weil’s nomination was announced on September 10, 2013.  His confirmation vote will take place later this year.
