Operating Engineers to Formally Re-Affiliate with North America’s Building Trades Unions

BCTD_LogoWASHINGTON, DC – The following statements were issued today by James T. Callahan, General President of the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE), and Sean McGarvey, President of North America’s Building Trades Unions, upon the announcement that the IUOE will formally re-affiliate with North America’s Building Trades Unions, effective January 1, 2014:

General President Callahan:  “I am pleased to announce that the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) will once again be affiliated with North America’s Building Trades Unions.  Raising our collective voice and acting with common purpose through this affiliation will benefit not only IUOE members, but all union construction tradesmen and women throughout the U.S. and Canada.  We look forward to working with President Sean McGarvey, BCTD Secretary-Treasurer Brent Booker and the Governing Board of Presidents to create opportunities for construction workers and to provide a reliable and highly skilled workforce for contractors and owners.  The construction industry and its workforce endured significant losses in the recent recession, but by working together as North America’s Building Trades Unions, we can achieve a brighter and more prosperous future for our members.”

Founded in 1896, the International Union of Operating Engineers today has approximately 400,000 members in 123 local unions throughout the United States and Canada.  It is the 10th largest union in the AFL-CIO, and it maintains and operates over 100 state-of-the-art training and apprenticeship programs across North America in order to ensure that IUOE members are the safest, most productive, and highly skilled craft workers in the industry.  www.iuoe.org

President McGarvey:  “This is a great day for the construction industry in North America in general, and the union construction industry in particular.  We are pleased to formalize the close working relationship we have enjoyed with the International Union of Operating Engineers over the past several years.  To have General President Callahan contribute his voice, his insight and his vision to the deliberations of our Governing Board of Presidents will enhance our collective objective of raising standards for all who work in the construction industry.  With the Operating Engineers as a formal partner, we will better serve the needs of our clients, our customers, our contractors and, most importantly, the members we represent.  We will build upon our combined legacy of creating opportunities through apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship programs that are so vital to strengthening and building the middle class across North America.  I want to offer my profound appreciation to General President James T. Callahan, General Secretary Treasurer Brian Hickey, and the entire IUOE General Executive Board, for taking this important step.”
