New Union Plus National Labor College Scholarships

Helping Building Trades Members Prepare for the Next Step in Their Careers

This October we’re introducing the Union Plus Building Trades President’s Award– a total of over $13,500 in scholarships to Building Trades union members who register for the National Labor College’s online degree programs.

Starting with the January 2012 semester, the Union Plus Building Trades President’s Awardwilloffer a total of seventeen scholarships to Building Trades union members who enroll in a new online degree program at the National Labor College (NLC). Each $795 scholarship covers a 3-credit course.

Since 2002, Union Privilege has been providing Union Plus scholarship funds to help union members pursue degrees at the NLC, thenation’s only accredited higher education institution devoted exclusively to educating union members and their families, leaders and staff. The Union Plus National Labor College Scholarship Program has provided more than $278,000 to NLC students since its inception.

The NLC offers three new online degree completion programs in their School of Professional Studies—making it possible to complete a Bachelor’s degree in less than two years for less than $10,000. These programs are for students who have started, but not yet completed, a Bachelor’s degree or for students who have completed an apprenticeship that has been assessed by a third party for college credit.  The NLC can tell you if an apprenticeship may qualify for college credit.  Bachelor’s degrees are available in:

  • Construction Management
  • Business Administration
  • Emergency Readiness and Response Management

Current dues paying members of Building Trades unions that participate in Union Plus programs are eligible for this scholarship, including these affiliate unions:  BAC, Boilermakers, IBEW, IBT, Insulators, Ironworkers, IUEC, IUPAT, LIUNA, OPCMIA, Roofers, SMWIA, and UA.

Mark Ayers, President of the Building & Construction Trades Department, says, “I highly recommend members finish their degree at the National Labor College. We all want more opportunities to help union members enhance their careers and the Union Plus scholarship money will help.”

Leslie Tolf, President of Union Privilege, the provider of Union Plus benefits, explains Union Plus’ commitment to higher education: “Higher education is critical to the continued strength of the labor movement.  Tough economic times like now are the best times to invest in finishing a college degree. We are proud to support union members who understand the power of an education.”

NLC’s online degree programs are tailor-made for full-time working men and women by providing an affordable way for people who work and have family responsibilities to finish that college degree. The NLC:

  • Accepts most transfer credits from community colleges, military training, union classes and apprenticeships.
  • Is convenient – students study online, on their own schedule.
  • Costs less than you might think– at $265/credit, tuition is highly discounted for union members, staff and adult family members.

The scholarship program is administered by the NLC. These awards are for new students who enroll and register for one of the three new online degree completion programs.

Apply today! The deadline is December 12, 2011 to complete your scholarship application for NLC’s next semester starting in January 2012.  Check with the NLC for deadlines for other semesters.
