Oakland, California, is experiencing historical growth and a construction boom. IUPAT members, building trades affiliates, community activists, residents and elected leaders took to the streets on International Workers’ Day to raise awareness of the economic inequality, lack of community benefits, and unscrupulous out-of-town contractors that are being allowed to develop the skyline of Oakland. “Union Strong in Oakland. That was our May Day message,” said District Council 16/Local Union 12 Regional Director Juan Calderon. Oakland workers want a chance to build their town through apprenticeship opportunities, and to live in their town by earning the area’s standard wages.
