Since 1859, the Margaretsville Lighthouse has stood sentinel overlooking the shores of the Bay of Fundy. In 2010, it was one of 960 Lighthouses across Canada to be deemed “surplus” by the Canadian government. This designation shifted the responsibility for care onto small communities, many of which cannot afford the costs of maintenance and upkeep, allowing these lighthouses to quickly fall into states of disrepair.
District Council 39 works closely with government and community preservation and heritage societies to help those communities in greatest need. “We see these projects as an opportunity for our union to both build and strengthen relationships within our communities,” said DC 39 Business Manager/Secretary-Treasurer Jonathan Gaul. “Our trade is proudly on display and our volunteers demonstrate our strong work ethic, our commitment to teamwork, our leadership and our passion. Everything that embodies what it means to be union.”
