Today’s verdict brings relief for many Americans and a rare sense of accountability. The pain for George Floyd’s family and the loss of life cannot be wiped away from this verdict and true justice rests when we transform our criminal justice system that so rarely does provide justice. As the verdict approached, our nation was terrified because we know the injustice that surrounds us, particularly for Black Americans, and is embedded within our political, economic and judicial system.

When George Floyd was murdered last year, our union mobilized and marched for justice all summer. Today we finally saw justice for George Floyd and his family.

We know there is so much more work to be done to end systemic racism in this country and the workplace.

There can be no justice with rampant economic inequality, a more imprisoned, policed and militarized population than any major country, and one which since its inception has been built on the continued exploitation of Black and Brown workers. Our union stands in solidarity with those who’ve been in the streets demanding true justice and will continue to do so until it’s gotten.

It is the work of our union and all unions to fight for workers inside and outside the workplace, which includes the injustices and discrimination Black Americans face in broader society. The wellbeing of our members doesn’t stop at the exit of our job sites, our solidarity continues into our communities. As unionists, we must be at the forefront of upholding our values of collectivity, solidarity, mutuality, and justice for all.

It’s a victory for justice for George Floyd today, but we have yet to arrive at the day where racism and injustice have forever left us. Until that day comes, we are with you in the continued fight.
